Irembo Design System 🇷🇼

2023

Project Duration

3 Months

Responsibilities

Research and Analysis, Usability Testing, UI/UX design, Accessibility and Documentation

Introduction

Irembo is a technology-focused company specializing in the creation of digital solutions to facilitate online service delivery and payment processing for businesses. Presently, Irembo is in the process of developing various products within the services and fintech sectors.

Problem

A key challenge faced by the organization was in relation to the lack of uniformity in design implementation. Different teams interpreted and executed design elements in disparate ways, resulting in an inconsistent user experience and branding across multiple products.

The practice of designing and building individual components from the ground up for each project proved to be inefficient and time-consuming. As products and services expanded, the task of maintaining a cohesive and scalable design became increasingly difficult, leading to delays in project delivery.

For organizations with a diverse portfolio of products or services, such as Irembo, the importance of maintaining a consistent brand identity cannot be overstated. The existing issue of products not reflecting a unified and aligned branding posed a significant challenge for the company.

Solution

In response to the challenge, our design team—consisting of me, Serge, and Ayodeji—devised a strategic solution:

The implementation of a robust design system. This comprehensive framework encompasses a structured set of guidelines, components, and tools meticulously crafted to ensure uniformity and efficiency in the design and development of Irembo's products and services.

Process

  1. Definition of goals and objectives:

We started by identifying the purpose of the design system. Improving consistency, efficiency, and scalability as the main goals.

  2. Conducting research and analysis:

We then conducted research to understand the current design landscape by analyzing the existing products, design elements and identify user needs and pain points.

  3. Creation of an Inventory:

We therefore created an exhaustive list of design elements, components, patterns and document variations and inconsistencies needed.

  4. Establishing Design Principles:

To get started with visuals, we defined a set of guiding principles for the design system. We considered factors like usability, accessibility, and Irembo's brand identity.

  5. Design UI elements and components:

We created a library of reusable UI components. Composed of buttons, forms, navigation elements, etc. We also ensured the responsiveness for the elements on different screen sizes.

  6. Collaborate and Gather Feedback:

We involved stakeholders like developers, product managers, communications and marketing teams and others to collect feedback and iterate the design system to best fit our needs and goals.

  7. Test and Iterate:

We took time to test the design system by implementing it in real projects. We carefully monitored its effectiveness and made necessary adjustments.

Impact

  1. Visual Consistency and Brand Recognition:

There has been significant improvements in the consistency of the products being developed across the organization.

  2. Design and Development Time Reduction [71.43%]:

The time it took to design a new feature improved highly, a feature that took 7 days to have now takes nearly 2 days. That's roughly 71.43% efficiency improvement.

  3. User Satisfaction [83%]:

A survey was conducted following the revamp of one of the products using the new design elements and 5/6 ≈ 83% users found the new ui more readable, accessible and appealing.

We regularly assess different metrics to derive valuable insights into the ongoing impact and effectiveness of the design system, allowing for adjustments and improvements over time.
